Five European Nations Confirm Navalny Was Poisoned with Rare Dart Frog Toxin, Report Russia to Chemical Weapons Body
Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands announce laboratory analysis conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine in samples from Alexei Navalny's body, two years after his death in a Russian Arctic prison.
Two years after Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in a remote Arctic prison, five European nations have announced laboratory findings that they say conclusively prove he was poisoned with a rare and lethal toxin found in South American poison dart frogs.
The foreign ministries of Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands issued a joint statement on February 14 during the Munich Security Conference, declaring that analysis of samples from Navalny's body "conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine."
What is Epibatidine?
Epibatidine is a powerful neurotoxin found naturally in the skin of poison dart frogs native to Ecuador. The five governments emphasized that "dart frogs in captivity do not produce this toxin, and it is not found naturally in Russia."
The toxin works similarly to nerve agents, causing shortness of breath, convulsions, seizures, a slowed heart rate, and ultimately death. Scientists say it is approximately 200 times more potent than morphine, with lethal doses measured in minuscule amounts as little as 1.4 micrograms.
European Governments Point to Kremlin
"Russia had the means, motive and opportunity to administer this poison," the joint statement declared. The five countries announced they were reporting Russia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for a breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul acknowledged that identifying the poison took two years because it was "a complicated process." However, European officials expressed high confidence in their assessment.
Navalnaya Reacts at Munich Conference
Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, appeared alongside European foreign ministers at the Munich Security Conference to announce the findings. "I was certain from the first day that my husband had been poisoned, but now there is proof," she said. "Putin killed Alexei with chemical weapon. Vladimir Putin is a murderer. He must be held accountable for all his crimes."
Moscow Rejects Allegations
Russian authorities have consistently maintained that Navalny died of natural causes after feeling unwell following a walk at the Polar Wolf maximum-security prison in Siberia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the European findings "biased and not based on anything."
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the allegations as "information leaks" and "necropropaganda," while the Russian embassy in London stated: "One must ask what kind of person would believe this nonsense about a frog."
Pattern of Poisonings
The case adds to a documented pattern of alleged Russian poisoning attacks. Navalny himself survived an earlier assassination attempt in 2020 using the nerve agent Novichok, which forced him to be evacuated to Germany for treatment. Britain has accused Russia of the 2018 Novichok attack in Salisbury targeting former intelligence officer Sergei Skripal.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot wrote on social media that the findings show "Vladimir Putin is prepared to use biological weapons against his own people in order to remain in power."
Dutch Perspective
The Netherlands' involvement in the investigation reflects the country's commitment to international accountability mechanisms. Dutch officials have been at the forefront of efforts to hold Russia accountable through international legal frameworks, including their role in the investigation of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014.
