German-Turkish Director Ilker Catak Wins Golden Bear at Berlinale for Political Drama Yellow Letters
The 76th Berlin Film Festival concludes with politically charged ceremony as Yellow Letters takes top prize and Sandra Huller wins Best Performance for Rose.
German-Turkish filmmaker Ilker Catak has won the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival for his political drama Yellow Letters, marking the first German victory at the Berlinale in 22 years.
A Terrifying Premonition
Yellow Letters follows a left-leaning Turkish couple whose comfortable life in Ankara comes under increasing pressure when they draw the unwelcome attention of the state. Jury president Wim Wenders called the film a terrifying premonition, a look into the near future that could possibly happen in our countries as well.
This is a movie that speaks up very clearly about the political language of totalitarianism as opposed to the empathetic language of cinema, Wenders said.
Sandra Huller Triumphs Again
German actress Sandra Huller received the Silver Bear for Best Performance for her title role in Markus Schleinzers Rose. The black-and-white drama tells the story of a woman passing herself off as a man in rural 17th-century Germany to escape the constraints of patriarchy. This marks Hullers second Silver Bear, following her 2006 win for Requiem.
Politically Charged Ceremony
Festival director Tricia Tuttle acknowledged the tensions surrounding this years edition. We were publicly challenged this year, and that does not always feel good, but it is good, she said. Criticism and speaking up is part of democracy.
Other Major Winners
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to Salvation by Emin Alper. American director Lance Hammers Queen at Sea won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Best Supporting Performance for Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall. Grant Gee won Best Director for Everybody Digs Bill Evans, his biopic of the legendary jazz pianist.
