Danish Foreign Minister Calls Trump's Greenland Demands 'Totally Unacceptable' After Washington Talks
Lars Løkke Rasmussen returns from meetings with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring that American ambitions to "conquer" the Arctic territory cannot be accepted.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has delivered a firm rejection of American demands following talks in Washington with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the future of Greenland.
Constructive Yet Unacceptable
"It's clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland," Rasmussen told reporters after the meeting. While characterizing the discussions as "constructive," he made clear that Denmark's position remains unchanged: selling or ceding Greenland to the United States is "totally unacceptable."
The talks took place against a backdrop of escalating tensions, with Trump having repeatedly refused to rule out military force to achieve his goal of American control over the Arctic territory.
Security Cooperation Offered
Rasmussen emphasized that Denmark is willing to address legitimate American security concerns through NATO cooperation. "If Greenland's security is at risk, we can address this inside NATO," he stated, pointing to the military alliance's collective defense framework.
The purpose of recent European military deployments to Greenland, he explained, "is to enhance security in the Arctic" within the NATO framework-not to challenge American interests but to strengthen shared defense capabilities.
Bipartisan Congressional Support
A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation visited Copenhagen to reassure Denmark of continued American support outside the White House's confrontational approach. Senator Chris Coons and other lawmakers emphasized that Congress does not support efforts to pressure allies through threats or force.
Dutch Solidarity
The Netherlands has expressed full support for Denmark's position. Dutch officials have participated in NATO coordination meetings regarding Arctic security and have joined other European nations in rejecting any suggestion that territorial sovereignty can be purchased or coerced.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte, now serving as NATO Secretary General, has called for dialogue while defending the alliance's foundational principle that members' territorial integrity is inviolable.
