Europe Weighs Trade Retaliation Options as Greenland Crisis Deepens
Officials consider activating anti-coercion instrument against US as diplomatic talks with Washington fail to ease tensions.
European officials are actively considering trade retaliation measures against the United States as diplomatic efforts to resolve the Greenland crisis show no signs of progress.
Trade Bazooka Option
The EU's Anti-Coercion Instrument, dubbed the "trade bazooka," could impose restrictions on US suppliers, exclude American firms from public tenders, and limit foreign direct investment. The Financial Times reported the EU was contemplating measures worth up to 93 billion euros.
French Push
France has been among the most vocal advocates for activating the instrument. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated the EU "must be prepared" to use all available tools.
German Caution
Germany has traditionally been more cautious about trade confrontation with the US, given the extensive economic ties between the two nations. However, the Greenland crisis is testing even Berlin's patience.
Dutch Trade Exposure
The Netherlands, with over $122 billion in annual trade with the US, faces significant exposure to any tariff war. Dutch officials have emphasized the need for a coordinated European response rather than unilateral action.
