Germany and European Allies Deploy Troops to Greenland Amid Trump Pressure Campaign
German Bundeswehr soldiers arrive in Nuuk alongside Danish and other NATO allies as Europe demonstrates solidarity with Denmark over American demands to purchase the Arctic territory.
German military personnel have arrived in Greenland as part of a coordinated European show of solidarity with Denmark, as tensions escalate over President Donald Trump's demands to purchase the Arctic territory.
European Military Presence
Soldiers of the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, arrived at Nuuk Airport on January 16, joining Danish and other NATO personnel already present in the self-governing Danish territory. The deployment comes amid unprecedented American pressure on Denmark to cede control of the strategically important island.
The Danish military organized a planning meeting with NATO allies, including the United States, to discuss Arctic security on the alliance's northern flank. American forces were invited to participate in Operation Arctic Endurance, scheduled for the coming days.
Arctic Command Statement
The Joint Arctic Command commander confirmed that despite Trump's claims about Russian and Chinese vessels threatening the island, no such military presence has been observed. "In my two-and-a-half years as a commander in Greenland, I haven't seen any Chinese or Russian combat vessels or warships," he stated.
When asked about the theoretical scenario of American troops using force on Danish soil, the commander referenced a Cold War-era law governing Danish rules of engagement: "It is Danish law that a Danish soldier, if attacked, has the obligation to fight back."
Netherlands and Finland Also Present
Dutch and Finnish military representatives have also traveled to Greenland, further demonstrating European unity in the face of American demands. The visits have reportedly angered the Trump administration, which views them as interference in what it considers a bilateral matter with Denmark.
Strategic Importance
Greenland's strategic value has increased significantly due to its location along potential Arctic shipping routes, its vast untapped mineral reserves including rare earth elements, and its position as a potential site for missile defense systems.
Trump has argued that American control of Greenland is essential for the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, though military analysts dispute whether the island's geography makes it uniquely suitable for such purposes.
