Greenland Crisis Overshadows Ukraine Security Talks as Europe Struggles to Balance Priorities
European leaders dodge questions about Greenland at Paris summit while trying to maintain US engagement on Ukraine, exposing the delicate balancing act facing the continent.
As the Coalition of the Willing summit continued in Paris for a second day, the elephant in the room became impossible to ignore: can Europe trust American security commitments while Washington threatens to seize allied territory?
Awkward Questions
The first journalist to take the floor after the summit's joint press conference asked President Macron directly whether Europe could "still trust" America given Trump's threats against Greenland.
Macron deflected, highlighting US participation in Ukraine security guarantees. British Prime Minister Starmer was equally diplomatic: "The relationship between the UK and the US is one of our closest relationships, particularly on issues of defence, security and intelligence."
Priorities Clear
European officials made clear their priority order. "The priority is Ukraine, European defence and European security, and keeping the Americans in," as one analyst put it. But privately, leaders recognize they are buying time.
Security Guarantees Progress
Despite the Greenland distraction, substantive progress was achieved on Ukraine security architecture. The coalition agreed to continue military assistance, establish a US-Ukraine coordination cell in Paris, and prepare sanctions packages for any future Russian aggression.
Dutch Participation
The Netherlands participated fully in the summit discussions, with officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining both transatlantic unity and respect for international law-principles that apply equally to Ukraine and Greenland.
