Rubio Refuses to Rule Out Military Action Against Greenland as Diplomatic Talks Planned
US Secretary of State tells journalists that "every president retains the option" to use military force while announcing meetings with Danish government in coming days.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has refused to take military options against Greenland off the table while announcing plans to meet with the Danish government in the coming days.
Military Option Retained
"If the president identifies a threat to the national security of the United States, every president retains the option to address it through military means," Rubio told journalists. "We always preferred to settle it in different ways, that included in Venezuela."
The reference to Venezuela-where US forces arrested President Maduro just days earlier-sent a chill through European capitals.
Diplomatic Track
Despite the threatening rhetoric, Rubio confirmed that diplomatic discussions would continue. He is expected to meet Danish officials to discuss both Greenland and broader Arctic security issues.
Danish Response
Danish officials have maintained their position that Greenland is not for sale and that any future for the territory must be determined by Greenlanders themselves. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated unequivocally: "Europe will not be blackmailed."
European Coordination
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas is coordinating European responses, meeting with Danish and Greenlandic officials to present a unified front. The European Council has expressed full solidarity with Denmark.
